Civic garment infrastructure in Columbus

Established in December 2023 as an Ohio non-profit, The Fashion Community provides shared cutting tables, industrial sergers, and technical mentorship to eliminate exclusionary industry barriers across central Ohio.

Lytham Road Atelier

The founding charter

True garment construction begins with physical access to professional tools and patient instruction. We opened our workspace on Lytham Road to ensure independent patternmakers, stitchers, and student designers have unhindered access to heavy cutting tables and production machinery.

Rather than seeking external approval from distant fashion capitals, our non-profit anchors apparel development right here in Columbus, pairing rigorous hands-on skill training with grassroots showcase opportunities.

Guiding Principles

Open ateliers and circular textiles

Accessibility anchors our entire operational philosophy. Garment construction requires costly machinery that independent creators rarely afford independently. By pooling industrial overlock machines, heavy shears, and drafting tables under one cooperative roof, we dismantle capital barriers for emerging regional talent.

Textile stewardship guides our daily studio practice. Rather than discarding pattern scraps and post-consumer fabrics, our circular workshops repurpose regional deadstock, teaching designers zero-waste marker making and durable reconstruction techniques that preserve materials.

Collective Vision

Fashion becomes genuine civic infrastructure the moment everyone has equal access to the sewing machine and cutting table.
